Writing a report is a special exercise,
necessarily incomplete and inevitably subjective.

THIS EDITION OF THE 2015 CES WAS
LOOKING EXCEPTIONAL FOR FRANCE :
A RECORD PRESENCE IN THE NUMBER OF
EXHIBITORS ACCOMPANIED BY 2 MINISTERS
AND THE PRESIDENT OF MEDEF, RELAYED
BY UNPRECEDENTED MEDIA COVERAGE.

Wednesday, 7th January, changed everything in France
and nothing will ever be the same again.

Not easy in these conditions to take
an objective look at the new products.
Especially since the 2015 edition is not a ground breaking CES.

The French touch

With 120 companies present at the show, France is the most represented
country from Europe, placing it 4th in the world (!) Behind the US,
China and Taiwan.

Classement des pays CES 2015

Besides the "regulars" of the show,
Parrot, Withings, Netatmo or
even sen.se many startups
had traveled there.

United under the banner "French
Tech", 66 young shoots exhibited
at Eureka park (the part reserved
for start-ups) that is, 1 Company in 4.

The Normandy delegation, led by Pôle TES with support from the
Regional Council of Basse Normandy, was made up of four exhibitors
and about fifteen visitors. This is the 2nd time that Basse Normandy
has travelled here "in a pack".
WORDS, WORDS,

Emmanuel MACRON Emmanuel MACRON

Axelle LEMAIRE Axelle LEMAIRE

Pierre GATTAZ Pierre GATTAZ

CONQUER NEW MARKETS, FIND
DEALERS OR PARTNERS, IN BRIEF
PROMOTE BUSINESS. THE PRESENCE
OF EMMANUEL MACRON, AXELLE LEMAIRE AND
PIERRE GATTAZ SHOWS THE WILL OF
POLITICIANS AND SOCIAL PARTNERS TO
MAKE THIS FAIR A SHOWCASE OF
FRENCH INNOVATION.

MEDIA-WISE IT'S A WINNER

The small snag in the mechanism was the "Talent Sharing" event organized by the Medef for "networking".

To network the participants met in plenary in a vast hall (and therefore sparsely filled), and after Axelle Lemaire and Pierre Gattaz's speeches, numerous start-ups made their pitch one after another, each having 1 minute in which to cover business/product/service.

This went on for a long, long time, too long in fact and the last to present spoke to an almost empty room.

Companies had to pay out €500 to pitch, drinks were expensive ($10 a beer) and networking did not happen ...

It's disappointing to see that the MEDEF does not provide the human and financial resources necessary to organize an event in line with the challenges to be found at the CES for French companies …

Impossible to ignore the TVs, they were everywhere. Slimmer, more and more connected (but no real standard), more and more K. There was 4K, make room for the SUHD for "Super Ultra HD", that is 4K but even better.

And for the gourmets, we were
introduced to 8K screens, that is 4 x more
pixels than 4K. So yes it's beautiful,
yes the blacks are really, really black
but frankly what is this rather
pointless pixel race about...

PETS INTERNET

STRONGER PRESENCE OF OBJECTS THAT IMPROVE
OUR PETS LIVES,

from the connected collar (Scout 5000) at Motorola that carries
a camera, to the Petnet feeder that "intelligently"
distributes food for your companion and prevents excessive
eating while all the time monitoring.
When will we see the application to learn how to be a good pet owner ?

Like a plane

Without wings

THE OMNIPRESENCE OF DRONES
IS ONE OF THE BIG TRENDS
IN THIS FAIR : SMALL, LARGE,
FOR PROFESSIONALS, FOR MRS SMITH WITH OR WITHOUT A CAMERA
(BUT PREFERABLY WITH), SERIOUS DRONES OR CUSTOM BUILT MODELS.
Many, many (far too many) drones, especially since,
even if the scope for drones is extensive (mapping, real estate, events, sport ...), the regulatory constraints related to their civil use in Europe, and especially in France, still limit the deployment.

Technical tendencies

Connection now and autonomy later ...

No less than 11 manufacturers (Ford, Audi, VW, Toyota...) travelled to Vice City.

This type of exercise is new to them, as they are more
accustomed to speak about models than use and interface.

Ford
Audi R8

Some, like Audi, chose the technology demonstration by
sending a self-driving car from San Francisco to Las Vegas (well, with a human
behind the wheel just in case ...).

Ford took a different step by asking a relevant question: will the technology
be accessible and useful? The brand deploys a 10-year plan based
on experimentation on both business models and on users
or technological partners. With themes such as massive urbanization,
air quality (or lack of quality), shared mobility ...

Unlike last year - see Big Data and little clanger - Ford wants to be
reassuring about the protection of data and the 25 gigabytes of data that
the brand receives per hour per vehicle as part
of its Big Data Drive program.

50 billion connected devices in 2020,
you have most probably read
this forecast. it's a lot, especially if
it is compared to the 2 billion
smartphones currently in circulation.

At CES we could logically find (careful, this list is not exhaustive):
watches (including Withings Activité Pop), activity trackers (with
the Healbe Gobe that calculates calorie intake by measuring
the level of glucose in the blood) and monitoring systems
(MyFox Security System that prevents break-ins and is managed remotely via
an app, can operate without electricity for six hours and in case of a
Wi-Fi cut, can connect to another MyFox located within 3 km via radio waves).
Proliferation of devices, tons of data and still no
real consideration about preserving data ...

Maybe, at last, the subject of the 2016 ces ?

Real time
3d printing

The CES 2014 was very impressive in terms of 3D
printers. We are more cautious about this crop despite the incredible number of exhibitors.
Aside from the changes in filaments and materials (wood and iron at Makerbot or
Chocolat at 3D Systems), not much is new.

Oh yes ! The Proto Pasta PLA filament.
So we saw a (another one) drone manufactured
via a printer.

As the average price of 3D printing still remains
around 1 000 to 2 000 €, it may take some
time before it is adopted by the general public.

There was a far stronger presence of oculus this year. the size of their stand was multiplied by
20 and a large part of the staff were involved in keynotes and press conferences. The v3 helmet was presented, with the main change being the 3d sound, without any release date being indicated. 2015 maybe ...

Razer enters the game with its OSVR.

Free open-sourced software and hardware solutions, for both devices and VR helmets. It is possible to order the headphones
($ 199) or download all the technical information to do it yourself.
Technically the hardware is somewhere between the
Oculus V1 and V2 and works pretty well. The approach is
very interesting ; to be continued ...

Also on show, but not tested, was the Sulon Cortex which promises
to combine virtual and increased reality. Apart from its "unusual"
design, the object would be covered with sensors and scanners.
Development kits will be available this year for about $ 500.

But it is still the case that the virtual reality headsets
are heavy, bulky and do nothing for your sex appeal!

Interesting products or services but nothing ground breaking, no
disruption. this 2015 edition is that of consolidation or transition.
As usual it is eureka park that put on the best show and,
this year, the french were at the forefront.
let's hope that the frenchies will surf
the wave and go from idea to market.
With all activity trackers and watches connected, Me's Internet
is exploding. Beyond the issue of uses, standards or inter-connexion
between these objects, remains the question of treatment / storage of personal data
that still does not seem to have been taken into consideration by the players in the field.
A rather low key CES but with a good norman presence
and conquering businesses with the
Tes Pôle and the region.
